Corruption and Syndicate Control Grip BDRCS

Allegations of corruption and pro-Hasina favoritism have surfaced under Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) Chairman Dr. Azizul Islam, according to sources within the BDRCS.Since assuming office on 5 March 2025, concerns have been mounting among officials and staff members over unethical practices and the growing influence of a politically motivated syndicate within the organization.
Just a day after taking office, on 6 March 2025, a group of officers who were unfairly dismissed during the previous authoritarian regime met with the Chairman to request the implementation of the Review Commission's recommendations for their reinstatement. Although the Chairman assured swift action within 2 to 4 days, no progress has been made in nearly four months.
Despite the Society's constitution prohibiting political activities, known collaborators of the previous regime continue to operate openly under the banner of "Bangabandhu Parishad." This group has reportedly harassed nationalist and religious-minded employees, yet the Chairman has taken no action. Instead, those raising concerns faced retaliation, including transfers to less significant district offices.
Controversial appointments have also raised serious questions. The Chairman appointed his personal chamber’s appointment serial writer as his Personal Secretary (PS), violating recruitment rules. Additionally, Mr. Sultan Hossain was appointed as Deputy Secretary General on the basis of a fabricated CV. Under his leadership, a profit-oriented syndicate loyal to the Chairman has emerged, further marginalizing nationalist employees.
Promotion and transfer processes have reportedly been exploited for personal gain. Director-level promotions were allegedly sold for 5 million BDT each, while 35 pro-Awami League officers were simultaneously promoted at a reported price of 1 million BDT per person. Meanwhile, deserving officers were overlooked.
Moreover, the Chairman controversially extended the contract of Director Md. Mizanur Rahman, the brother-in-law of fugitive police officer Hafiz Akhtar, despite clear objections. Dr. Sahana, accused in over a dozen serious complaints, has been entrusted with key responsibilities, further consolidating the Chairman’s loyal network.
In addition, the HR and Finance Directors allegedly facilitate financial irregularities that benefit the Chairman. Proposals to reconstitute district committees have been delayed or manipulated for monetary gain, with only 22 out of 64 districts receiving approval—names allegedly altered through PS Sohag Mia’s influence.Concerns are growing that these practices threaten the Society's neutrality and credibility.
