Hasnat Abdullah, chief organizer (southern region) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), issued a warning regarding the recent incident in Patiya, saying that there will be a repeat of August 5 if what happened in Patiya repeats again. He has warned the police, saying: “We tell you—do not act in favour of any political party. Be pro-Bangladesh police. We do not even want NCP-loyal police. NCP believes that legitimacy lies with the people, and power belongs to the people. We want development for Bangladesh.”He made the remarks on Wednesday, during a street rally at Ghoshpara in Kurigram town after arriving there as part of the party’s ‘July March’, reports Bangla Tribune.
Directly addressing the police, Hasnat further said: “Our brothers in the police are in front of us. We want to tell you—do not become BNP’s police. The Awami League tried to turn the police into Awami League police, and you have seen the consequences of that.”
Earlier, at another street rally in Rajarhat upazila of the district, Hasnat highlighted various instances of irregularities and repression during the Awami League regime.
He said: “Students were shot dead on the streets. Clerics were dragged down from mosque pulpits by their beards and caps. We had no freedom. We want to say—no new extortionist will be allowed to rise in the new Bangladesh. We will not allow a Bangladesh where microphones are snatched from clerics. No corrupt individuals should be given shelter.”
At the event, he introduced Dr Atik Mujahid, a resident of Kurigram and joint convenor of NCP, as the party’s nominated candidate, calling upon the crowd to strengthen his cause.
