Rizvi accuses Jamaat of duplicity

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said that Jamaat is fielding candidates on one hand and demanding postponement of the elections on the other. Citing media reports, he said, "Jamaat has fielded candidates for 33 to 34 seats, yet now they want to postpone the elections."Rizvi made these remarks at a Milad Mahfil organized on the occasion of the holy Ashura at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan in the capital on Sunday (July 6). He said, "Why do you (Jamaat) want to postpone the elections? The term of the current government will end on August 5."f the elections are held in February, there will be one and a half years. Isn't this time enough to make reforms?' Indirectly addressing Jamaat, he said, 'On the one hand, they are demanding to postpone the elections, and on the other hand, they are also fielding candidates for some seats. This is duplicity.' Rizvi said, 'Jamaat's history has failed to understand the people's sentiments. If they had understood the people's mind in 1971, they would not have opposed the liberation war. They would not have gone to the elections with Sheikh Hasina under Ershad in 1986.They have always ignored the opinions of the people. In fact, the people are not an issue for them. He complained, "Jamaat does politics to fulfill its own interests, but in the end it is itself that suffers. That is why if they contest elections alone, they do not get more than one or two seats."He said, "Some parties may be trying to strengthen their position or achieve political interests by postponing the election."Rizvi also questioned the rationale for postponing the election, saying, "There is still enough time to create an environment based on equality. So what is the need to postpone the vote?" The BNP leader said that some of the recent incidents were not political but social crimes. He said, "It is the responsibility of law enforcement to control social crimes and bring the culprits to justice."
