NCP to rally outside EC HQ, demanding its reconstitution, local polls

The National Citizen Party (NCP) on Tuesday night announced that it will stage a protest in front of the Election Commission (EC) headquarters in Agargaon, Nirbachan Bhaban, at 11am on Wednesday, demanding immediate reformation of the EC based on the recommendations of the Electoral Reform Commission and the initiation of local government elections. This program was announced by NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain during a press conference at the NCP's central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka. In a written statement on behalf of the party, Akhtar said: “A complex political situation has arisen as a result of the illegal 2020 Dhaka South City Corporation election. We believe the biased role of the Election Commission is responsible for this situation.”

The NCP highlighted that although the Election Commission was a respondent in the case Ishraque Hossain vs Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and others, it unprecedentedly chose not to contest the case.

"As a result, a one-sided verdict was delivered. Moreover, it appears that the EC, instead of seeking redress from the higher court following the verdict, extended special privileges to the plaintiff," the NCP added.

Akhtar also said that the EC has previously made remarks that align with the stance of a "major political party" instead of maintaining neutrality.

He added that the current Election Commission was formed under the "Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Appointment Act 2022," enacted by the illegal and fascist Awami League government—an act that was rejected by all anti-fascist political groups at the time.

He further said that the absence of public representatives has severely disrupted citizen services and hindered the implementation of social protection initiatives.

Referring again to the Ishraque Hossain vs Sheikh Fazle Noor and others case as a precedent, Akhtar claimed that across the country, candidates from illegal elections are now seeking judicial intervention, thereby deepening the crisis."In this situation, holding local government elections is the only solution to resolve the crisis and ease public suffering. However, the current biased Election Commission, formed under a fascist law, appears incapable of organizing such elections."
