Dhaka residents suffered on Tuesday as rainfall lashed various parts of the capital city under the influence of a low-pressure system over the sea and an active monsoon.Since the showers began around noon, there has been no sign of the rain stopping.Heavy rainfall has also been reported outside Dhaka, particularly in parts of the southern region. While there was no rain in the morning, the afternoon downpour caused significant disruption. After office hours, commuters faced a severe shortage of transport, fare hikes, waterlogging, and traffic congestion, and many alleyways in the city were submerged. The reduced number of vehicles on the city's roads due to the rain led CNG autorickshaw drivers and rickshaw pullers to charge higher fares.
Meanwhile, in some areas, people remained stuck in long tailbacks. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecast that the rainfall may continue over the next few days.
According to the BMD, due to the active southwest monsoon, some areas in the Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, and Barisal divisions may experience heavy (44 to 88mm) to very heavy (up to 188mm) rainfall in the next 24 hours.
There is also a risk of landslides in some hilly areas of Chittagong division due to the intense downpour.Additionally, the heavy rain may cause temporary waterlogging in parts of Dhaka, Chittagong, and Khulna metropolitan areas.
