Sohag killed over business dispute, not extortion:Police

Police have clarified that the murder of businessman Lal Chand, alias Sohag, 39, in front of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka was driven by a business dispute, not extortion as initially reported. The revelation came during a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Centre on Saturday, led by Lalbagh Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Jasim Uddin.DC Jasim stated that initial interrogations of the arrested suspects revealed a conflict over a scrap metal business, specifically regarding control of a shop.
“The victim, Sohag, and the perpetrators were related and had been business partners. A dispute over business transactions escalated, leading to the murder,” he explained. The incident occurred around 6:00pm on Wednesday, July 9, when a group brutally killed Sohag near Gate 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital.

Kotwali Police Station responded swiftly, bringing the situation under control. On July 10, Sohag’s elder sister filed a murder case at Kotwali Police Station. The victim’s body was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy, and a post-mortem report was prepared.

Police operations led to the arrest of Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, 41, and Tarique Rahman Robin, 22, on July 11, with a foreign pistol recovered from Robin.

Additionally, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Alamgir, 28, and Monir, alias Chhota Monir, 25, for their alleged involvement.

On Friday night, Kotwali Police arrested another suspect, Md. Titon Gazi, 32.

DC Jasim emphasised that a specialised team has been formed to investigate the motive behind this high-profile case, apprehend all involved, and uncover the full circumstances of Sohag’s death.

“Police are actively pursuing leads, analysing CCTV footage, and conducting raids to ensure justice,” he added. Operations continue to identify and arrest any remaining suspects.
