Gun attack on Pallabi realtor over Tk 5 crore ransom demand
Amid nationwide outrage over the brutal murder of a scrap dealer in Old Dhaka for refusing to pay a ransom, a similar attack occurred at a business establishment in Pallabi, Dhaka, on Saturday, July 12. The assault took place around 5 PM at AK Builders, a housing construction company in the Alubdirtek area of Pallabi. Company officials reported that a group of armed assailants attacked their premises after the company refused to pay a Tk 5 crore ransom. During the attack, four shots were fired, injuring an employee, Shariful Islam, who was admitted to Kurmitola General Hospital.Amimul Ehsan, son of AK Builders Chairman Md. Qayum Ali Khan, stated on Saturday that three weeks prior, an individual named Jamil demanded Tk 5 crore from his father. When the demand was unmet, assailants attacked the company in two phases, stealing items, including CCTV cameras. On Friday, a group of 30–40 attackers stormed the establishment, firing shots and injuring one employee.

Pallabi Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADC) Saleh Mohammad Zakaria told Jago News that a case is being prepared. “The injured employee, Shariful Islam, is in the hospital. He will file a case upon recovery. We are working to identify and apprehend the attackers soon,” he said.

According to sources, Chairman Qayum Ali Khan filed a General Diary (GD) with Pallabi Police Station on Thursday, detailing the extortion demands and prior attacks. The GD noted that the first attack occurred on June 27, followed by another on July 4, with ongoing threats to kill. The Friday attack marked the third assault on the company.

This incident follows the brutal killing of Lal Chand alias Sohag, a 39-year-old scrap dealer, on a busy road in front of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka last Wednesday. His family alleges he was murdered for refusing to pay a monthly extortion demand of Tk 2 lakh. Police are yet to identify the attackers in the Pallabi incident, and investigations are ongoing.
