Govt issues gazette on National Consensus Commission formation

The Cabinet Division on Thursday issued a gazette notification on establishment of a seven-member National Consensus Commission, led by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, to review and implement recommendations from six reform commissions. Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on January 15 announced formation of the commission while receiving reports of the reform commissions.The commission includes:   Professor Ali Riaz, chief of the Constitution Reform Commission, Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, chief of the Public Administration Reform Commission, Safar Raj Hossain, chief of the Police Reform Commission, Badiul Alam Majumder, chief of the Election Reform Commission, Justice Emdadul Haque, chief of the Judicial Reform Commission, and Iftekharuzzaman, chief of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Reform Commission.  

The National Consensus Commission will begin its work on February 15 and operate for a term of six months. Its primary objective is to engage with political parties and stakeholders to build a national consensus on reforms in the electoral system, public administration, judiciary, anti-corruption measures, and police activities. The commission will also recommend actionable steps to implement these reforms ahead of the upcoming elections.  

The Chief Adviser’s office will serve as the commission’s secretariat, with the government determining the commission’s official office location, as stated in the notification.
