New CEC pledges free and fair elections

Newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has vowed to ensure free, fair, and credible elections. Speaking shortly after his appointment on Thursday (November 21), he said, “I will do whatever is necessary for free, fair, and acceptable elections, InshaAllah. With this responsibility comes the duty to fulfill it properly, and for that, everyone’s cooperation is essential."  The Cabinet Division issued a notification on the same day, confirming the appointment of Nasir Uddin as CEC alongside four other Election Commissioners. The appointments were made by the President.  The other Election Commissioners are:  Anwarul Islam Sarkar, former additional secretary, Abdur Rahmanel Masud, former district and sessions judge, Tahmida Ahmed, former joint secretary, and Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah, retired Brigadier General.  

Background of the new CEC  Nasir Uddin, the 14th CEC of Bangladesh, hails from Kutubdia in Cox's Bazar. Graduating in economics from Chittagong University, Nasir Uddin began his career as a teacher before joining the BCS 79 batch in government service.  

Nasir Uddin served as Information Secretary in 2004, then Energy Secretary, Planning Commission member and Secretary of the Ministry of Health.

Recently, he was serving as a member of the Local Government Reform Commission under the interim government before being entrusted with the responsibility of leading the Election Commission.
