Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman appealed for unity and encouragement rather than criticism of the military. Addressing a sombre audience, during a special programme held Tuesday marking National Martyred Army Day, titled "In Memory of the Martyred Officers of the Pilkhana Massacre", the chief of army saff said, “Help us, don’t attack us, inspire us. We’re the only force standing firm, alongside the Navy and Air Force, while every other organisation is in chaos.”Reflecting on the current crisis, General Waker-uz-Zaman emphasised the army’s resilience amid widespread turmoil. “Don’t target the army—offer us advice instead. We’ll take good suggestions seriously. We want to unite and push the country and nation forward,” he urged. He expressed puzzlement at the hostility some direct toward the military and himself, noting, “I still don’t understand why there’s this hatred. We’re the backbone right now, with the Navy and Air Force by our side.”He warned of the consequences of division: “Our next generations will live here. If we leave them nothing but conflict and strife, they won’t survive in this country.”
Highlighting the army’s discipline as its strength, he revealed a directive to his officers: “If there’s even a sliver of doubt about someone’s guilt, the decision must favour them. That’s my order.”
He added that he has personally enhanced several proposals submitted to him, underscoring a commitment to justice and principle.
Looking ahead, the Army Chief voiced support for the interim government’s goals. “We’re heading toward a free, fair, and inclusive election. The government will handle the necessary reforms, and Dr Yunus is doing his utmost to keep the nation united. We must support him and ensure his success,” he said.
Despite acknowledging potential differences in opinion, General Waker-uz-Zaman called for solidarity. “We may think differently, but at day’s end, we must stand together for the country and its people. Only then will we progress and find the right path.”
