Rizvi condemns mob harassment of ex-CEC Nurul Huda, demands accountability

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has demanded punishment for those who acted inappropriately with former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda over the past two days, before his arrest and at court.“Those who formed a mob in the name of justice must be identified and brought under the law,” Rizvi said while addressing the media at the BNP’s Naya Paltan central office on Monday. He said: “The guilty will be tried. But the BNP does not believe in any principle where someone can be treated unjustly in an extrajudicial manner. What happened publicly with the former CEC was undoubtedly a reprehensible act. The BNP demands justice for whoever is involved in this incident.”

He added: “It is the government's responsibility to ensure maximum security on court premises. People expect safety in such a sensitive place. Illegal actions in such spaces are simply unacceptable.”The BNP leader also said: “Some parties are trying to fish in troubled waters over this incident. Let me be clear—since August 5, our chairperson and acting chairman have sent a strong message: no one involved in internal disorder or unethical conduct within the party will be spared. Even when we were in prison, we tried to maintain discipline from behind bars."

"So far, punitive action has been taken against more than 4,000 BNP leaders and activists based on complaints. This proves the BNP is working towards peace, stability, and the democratic system in Bangladesh. We are committed to ensuring that democracy-loving people can practise democracy freely,” he added.
