No response from India on letter seeking Hasina's extradition

Bangladesh is yet to receive a response from India regarding a letter seeking the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tawfiq Hasan confirmed during a weekly briefing on Tuesday afternoon (December 24).Addressing media reports that India may not respond to the letter, Tawfiq Hasan said, "The diplomatic letter was handed over yesterday. As of now, no official response has been received through government channels. We are aware of the media reports but will refrain from commenting further at this stage. The Bangladesh government will determine its next steps based on India's response."On inquiries about Sheikh Hasina's current status in India, the spokesperson added, "We have received questions from the media over the past few days. Both the Foreign Adviser and Foreign Secretary have provided their responses. However, we are not in a position to comment specifically on this matter."

Tawfiq Hasan said that Bangladesh would wait a "reasonable period" for India’s reply to the note verbale. If no response is received within this timeframe, a formal demand letter will be issued.

When pressed about what constitutes a "reasonable period," he explained, "It depends on the subject being discussed. This is a highly sensitive matter, so there is no fixed timeline. In some cases, such issues take years to resolve."
