Jamaat ready for December polls, if nation is: Shafiqur

The Jamaat-e-Islami is ready to participate in the national election at any time if a level playing field is ensured, Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said.He made the statement on Tuesday during a meet the press event at a hotel in Banani, Dhaka. The event was organized to clarify the party's position on the Supreme Court verdict regarding Jamaat’s registration status.

Shafiqur said: “We initially proposed February as a possible timeframe, later extending it flexibly up to April. On the other hand, the BNP has fixed December as a strict deadline. Now, if the election is held in December, what will our role be? Not just December—if we find that even today, the playing field has truly been levelled and the nation along with all institutions are ready for a fair election, we have no objection to participating. The date is not the issue.”

He emphasized that unless the fundamental issues are addressed, holding elections in December or April will be meaningless.

“The main challenge is ensuring clarity on these critical matters,” he said.

The Jamaat chief reiterated their demand that the election be held by mid-February or within April at the latest.

“Ideally, the election should take place before the upcoming Ramadan, or if that is not possible, then by April, as the weather in May and beyond makes it difficult to conduct polls,” he added.Shafiqur also called for arrangements to enable expatriates to vote.He said that overseas Bangladeshis must be given the opportunity to exercise their voting rights, a demand the party is unwilling to compromise on.

“Expatriates are citizens of the country but cannot exercise their rights. We urge the Election Commission to ensure their participation. It is not a difficult task, but we see no progress from the EC in this regard,” he noted.

During the session, the Jamaat chief also discussed various issues including local government elections before the national polls, the state of the judiciary, the party’s registration and the right to use an electoral symbol.
