5 businessmen were injured in the attack, vandalism and beating of students of City University in various business establishments based on trivial incidents in Savar. In protest of the incident, around two hundred local shop owners closed their businesses and staged a human chain and protest march on the road in front of the market । On Saturday (February 24) at noon, the affected businessmen held these programs at Khagan Bazar of Birulia Union of Upazila. At this time, the businessmen who suffered from the human chain said that some miscreants of the local city university have been attacking and looting the shops and beating us for trivial incidents. If they protested their oppression, the businessmen were taken inside the university and tortured. The aggrieved businessmen also said that they purposefully create problems and later they claim to settle them and demand huge sums of money. If they disobeyed, businessmen were attacked and riots were carried out in business establishments.
Victim grocer Nazrul Islam said, last Wednesday (February 21st) in the afternoon, City University students Hridoy (23), Himel (29), Shubo (26), Rashed (28) and Shahed (25) of my younger son Shamim attacked the drinking water. He hit him with a brick after getting involved in an argument. When Shamim fell down on the ground, they started punching and kicking him. At one point, my elder son Salim came forward and the attackers beat him too.
Later 20-25 more students from the campus joined them and again attacked and vandalized my business. Also, to escape from the attackers, when my son Shamim took shelter in the shop of Tariqul Islam, a shopkeeper next door, miscreants attacked there and beat Tariqul and his son Asif. When I went ahead, they also beat me and broke the cash box in the shop and looted goods worth fifty thousand rupees including cash, cigarettes, chanachur, cakes and soft drinks. Despite filing a written complaint at the Savar Model Police Station, the police are not taking any action against the attackers.
Razzak store owner Razzak said, few days ago 4-5 mischievous students came to my shop and asked for a box of feather in the name of their elder brother. But as I did not give feather without money, later they brought more friends from the campus and attacked my shop and vandalized it and looted goods worth about 15 thousand rupees.
Saddam Hossain, another shopkeeper, said that some corrupt students of City University, led by Himel, Shubo, Rashed and Saheed, have been carrying out planned attacks on various business establishments. Many are silent because of their fear. But now the businessmen have their backs against the wall due to the increase in their level of oppression. Although a complaint has been made to the police, they are not taking any action. So we are forced to do human chain and protest.
When asked, market owner Md. Sifat said that some miscreants of City University are doing various misdeeds including drug consumption in the area. They don't always force money from traders. The matter has been reported to the university authorities along with the local chairman and the outpost police but we are not getting any remedy. Therefore, we are drawing the attention of the higher authorities of the administration to bring these scoundrels under the law and give severe punishment for the safety of the traders.
Md. Didar Hossain, Incharge of Birulia Police Outpost, said that if a written complaint is received against any scoundrel or terrorist, the matter will be investigated and legal action will be taken.
