Pakistan Peoples Party’s Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has been elected as the president for the second time with an overwhelming majority, beating the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-backed Sunni Ittehad Council candidate Mahmood Khan Achakzai.He, the ruling alliance joint candidate, secured 411 electoral votes in parliament in the presidential election while PTI-backed SIC candidate Mahmood Khan Achakzai bagged 181.Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday congratulated President-elect Asif Ali Zardari on his success in the presidential poll, saying that the elected members of all provinicial and national legislatives expressed confidence in the ruling coalition's candidate.
He expressed hope that Zardari will fulfil his responsibilities as the president in a good way and represent the strength of the Centre. "Zardari's election as president is the continuity of democratic values," PM Shehbaz said, pledging to work for the progress and prosperity of Pakistan.
