Ebtedayee madrasas to be nationalised, finally

In response to a 10-day continuous protest by teachers, the Ministry of Education has decided to nationalise all registered independent ebtedayee madrasas across the country in phases. The announcement was made by SM Masudul Haque, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Education, at Shahbagh in the capital on Tuesday (January 28) at around 4:30om.Earlier in the day, senior officials from the Ministry of Education held a meeting to address the nationalisation demands. The decision to nationalize these madrasas and accept the teachers' six-point demands was finalized during the meeting.Joint Secretary SM Masudul Haque confirmed the ministry’s decision to nationalise the madrasas in phases and expressed regret over the police’s baton charge on protesting teachers.

The agitation began when teachers of independent ebtedayee madrasas demanded nationalisation, including improved salaries and benefits.

On Monday, the protesting teachers issued a 24-hour ultimatum for the government to meet their demands, even staging a sit-in overnight.

The protest resumed Tuesday morning at Shahbagh, where the teachers remained steadfast in their demands despite adverse conditions.

The ministry's decision marks a significant step toward addressing the long-standing grievances of ebtedayee madrasa teachers. However, the phased implementation of the nationalization process is expected to follow.

This announcement has brought some relief to the protesting teachers, signalling an end to their sit-in demonstration. Further details about the implementation timeline and funding for the nationalization will likely be revealed in the coming days.
