BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr with her family in London for the first time in more than half a century, marking a rare reunion with her eldest son, Tarique Rahman.A video shared on BNP’s verified Facebook page showed Tarique Rahman walking beside his mother, who was seated in a wheelchair, in a London park. Another family photo, obtained from BNP sources, featured Khaleda Zia alongside Tarique Rahman, his wife Zubaida Rahman, and their daughter Zaima Rahman.According to a source close to the Zia family, Tarique Rahman took the photo with his mother after returning from Eid prayers on Sunday morning, London time.Khaleda Zia was flown to London on January 8 for advanced medical treatment. Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said she was in better condition and enjoying Eid with her family after eight years.
When asked about her return to Bangladesh, Fakhrul said, “From what I have heard, it is not finalized yet, but she is expected to return by mid-April.”
Khaleda Zia was jailed in 2018 on corruption charges and later released under special consideration during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the fall of the Awami League government in a coup on August 5, President Md. Shahabuddin ordered her release, and the court overturned the verdicts in the two corruption cases against her.
The last time Khaleda Zia celebrated Eid in London was in 2017, when she spent three months at Tarique Rahman’s residence while undergoing treatment. Her subsequent imprisonment prevented her from marking the occasion with her family until now.
