Yunus likely to meet Tarique in London on June 13

A significant moment in Bangladeshi politics is expected to unfold in London.On June 13, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is likely to meet Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, in the morning, London local time.Sources indicate that the meeting was discussed during the National Standing Committee, BNP’s highest policy-making body. Tarique Rahman informed party leaders about the planned meeting, noting that June 13 was finalised after consultations with the Chief Adviser’s office.A government source confirmed that discussions may cover the upcoming national parliamentary elections, the current political landscape, and potential compromises or strategic positions of political parties. 

Another source close to the government affirmed the possibility of this high-profile meeting in London.A BNP source revealed that the party’s standing committee finalised the meeting plan on Monday night. The Chief Adviser’s press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, told a media outlet, “Tarique Rahman leads a major political party in Bangladesh. A meeting with the Chief Adviser in London would send a positive signal for the country. However, it’s not yet confirmed. We’ll know more upon reaching London.”

No official statement has been issued by the government or the Chief Adviser’s office or the BNP regarding this matter.Professor Muhammad Yunus departed Dhaka for a four-day official visit to the UK on Monday. The Emirates Airlines flight carrying the Chief Adviser and his entourage left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 7:30 pm, according to the Chief Adviser’s press wing.

During the visit, Professor Yunus will meet King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, where he will receive the ‘King Charles Harmony Award.’ He is also scheduled for a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and will participate in a dialogue hosted by the UK’s Chatham House policy research institute.
