Various regions of the country may experience a severe heatwave this month, with daytime temperatures possibly exceeding 40°C. At the same time, a cyclone may form over the Bay of Bengal, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).A committee of experts from the BMD, responsible for long-term forecasting, made this prediction. The committee held its regular meeting on March 27 at the Storm Warning Centre in Dhaka, with additional participation via video conference. The meeting was presided over by Md Mominul Islam, the acting director of the Meteorological Department.According to the long-term forecast report, rainfall in April is expected to be below average. One to two low-pressure systems may develop over the Bay of Bengal, one of which could intensify into a depression or a cyclone.
The report also stated that both daytime and nighttime temperatures are likely to remain above normal throughout the month. Bangladesh may experience light to moderate thunderstorms, including hailstorms, for five to seven days. Additionally, severe Nor'westers may occur for one to three days.
The Meteorological Department predicted that the country could experience two to four mild (36–37.9°C) and moderate (38–39.9°C) heatwaves, as well as one to two severe (40–41.9°C) heatwaves this month.
The long-term forecast report further indicated that major rivers across the country are expected to maintain a normal flow in April. However, in the second half of the month, moderate to heavy rainfall in the northeastern region and its upstream areas may cause a rapid rise in river water levels.
