'Not above mistakes': Shafiqur apologizes to those hurt by Jamaat’s actions

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has made an unconditional apology to anyone who might have been hurt by the party, its leaders or its activists.Shafiqur was speaking during a press conference at the Muktijoddha Hall of the Institution of Diploma Engineers in Kakrail, Dhaka. The briefing was convened to address the Supreme Court verdict acquitting Jamaat Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam from a previous death sentence in a war crimes case.“We do not claim to be beyond mistakes, either as individuals or as a political party,” said Shafiqur.

He added: “To all those who have been hurt—directly or indirectly—by any of our members or our party’s past actions, I seek unconditional forgiveness. If anyone has been aggrieved by our behavior or performance, I humbly ask for your pardon.

“This verdict shows that the truth ultimately prevails, no matter how long it takes.”

Shafiqur described Azharul as a victim of extreme oppression under fascist forces and credited his release after prolonged incarceration to the grace of Allah and the judgment of the Supreme Court.

Highlighting the importance of national unity and justice, Shafiqur said: “Several of the nation's burning issues remain unresolved. All political parties and stakeholders must prioritize the interests of the people above all else.”

He pledged that, if given the opportunity to serve the nation in the future, Jamaat-e-Islami would work to end divisive and discriminatory politics.

“With public support, sincere effort and by the will of Allah we aim to reduce inequality in society,” he added.
