The gatekeepers and gatemen, who are protesting for job regularization, have announced they will begin their strike on that day. The protesters stated that, in pursuit of their demands, they had held a sit-in at the Railway Bhaban on August 18 of the previous year. On that day, a high-level meeting chaired by the then Secretary of the Railways Ministry took place. The meeting was attended by the Railways Secretary, the Director General of Bangladesh Railways, a representative of the Public Service Commission, administrative officers, project directors from both the Eastern and Western regions of Bangladesh Railways, relevant officials, representatives from the Bangladesh Army, the National Security Intelligence (NSI), and central representatives of the 1,500 gatekeepers and gatemen from both regions.
During that meeting, the Director General of Bangladesh Railways concluded that the demand for regularizing the jobs of 1,505 gatekeepers and gatemen from the Railway's Eastern and Western regions was justified. The central representatives of the gatekeepers and gatemen informed the meeting that, having worked for eight years in the Railway, they were experienced, and that the Public Service Commission would issue the necessary orders within a week.
