Students march with torches, demand justice for Magura rape victim

Students took to the streets of Dhaka University on Thursday, March 13, in a torchlight procession, demanding justice for the rape and death of an eight-year-old girl in Magura in chants—and the resignation of Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.  The march, organised under the banner "Chhatra Jantar Mashal Micil," began after 7:00pm from the Raju Sculpture. The procession wound through Nilkhet intersection, circled the university campus, passed Bijoy Ekattor Hall, and returned to Raju Sculpture via Shaheed Minar. Protesters carried lit torches and placards, raising their voices in unison with impassioned slogans.  Among the chants were:  "Why did Asia die? The administration must answer!" , "Police excel, yet rapists guard!". The demonstration follows the tragic death of the young victim earlier that day. Admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on March 8 in critical condition, she suffered three cardiac arrests on Thursday morning. Doctors stabilised her twice, but her heart failed to restart after the third, and she passed away around 1:00pm
