The Election Commission (EC) has assured that the registration and electoral symbol of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will be restored swiftly, according to the party’s Assistant Secretary General AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad.He made the statement to the media on Monday following a meeting with the EC at its headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, regarding the issues of registration and symbol allocation.Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin was present at the meeting. Hamidur said: “Yesterday (Sunday), the Supreme Court instructed the reinstatement of Jamaat to its previous status—with registration and symbol. We discussed with the Election Commission the court's directives in this regard.
“They responded positively and said they would implement it swiftly within the time required to complete the formal procedures.”
He added: “We urged them not to delay the execution of this verdict because the nation is watching. Millions of people are emotionally invested in this matter. The previous fascist government unjustly stripped us of that right.
“Now that the court has reinstated our right, we hope to get it back. We trust that the Election Commission will make that happen.”
CEC AMM Nasir Uddin and other concerned officials declined to comment to the media regarding when the registration and electoral symbol of Jamaat will be activated by the EC.
However, on Sunday, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told the media: “We have not yet received any directive regarding Jamaat’s registration and symbol. A decision will be made on the issue after receiving a copy of the Appellate Division’s verdict.”
